HOW TO SEARCH FOR LIBRARY MATERIALS
In addition to the LITERACY SUFFOLK/SCLS literacy collection, many public libraries in Suffolk County have collections that support adult literacy. Searching the County Catalog can identify these materials. The address for the County Catalog is: http://alpha2.suffolk.lib.ny.us/
To search for literacy materials in the County Catalog, use the following subject headings:
For adult readers: Readers for adult learners
For tutor materials: Basic Education
For ESOL tutor materials: Basic Education – Textbooks for Foreign Speakers
For GED: General Educational Development Test
For TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language
For Citizenship: Citizenship
These are very general subject headings that group together materials housed in Adult New Reader Collections throughout the county. To find more specific topics, use the ‘Limit by’ feature of the County Catalog. Instructions for using this feature are in the Resource Guide provided to tutors during the training workshop.
